Southern Scotland boasts a vast variety of arts and crafts venues, galleries, museums, workshops, studios and shops; many of which visitors can view or become involved within the artistic process, meeting the maker and enjoying an inspiring, yet educational day out with the family. Rich with cultural heritage, Dumfries and Galloway is host to more art and craft practitioners per square mile than anywhere else in the UK.
The Artists’ Town of Kirkcudbright was home to many distinguished artists such as E.A. Hornel and Jessie M. King in the 1920s; while also being renowned for being the summer haunt of famous Scottish Colourist, S.J. Peploe. Still, Kirkcudbright remains prosperous with many artists and craft workers resident in the town with much of their work being displayed in the local galleries and studios, keeping alive the original ethos of the Artists’ Town.
Being so enriched with the arts and crafts heritage, both Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders enjoy extensive disciplines ranging from architectural metalwork to ceramics; photography to clog and shoe making and from sculpture to jewellery making, meaning that there is something for everyone to enjoy.
