Cycling

Dumfries and Galloway and The Scottish Borders regions of southern Scotland host some excellent cycling and biking countryside and facilities in the UK.

Two major signposted cycling routes pass through the area i.e. National Cycling Routes1, 7 and 74, and the more upland National Byway Cycle Route which extends to 371 miles (597 km).

There is a myriad of quiet country roads which pass through unspoilt countryside, small towns and villages.

Cycling in southern Scotland

The unique attraction in the area is at Keir Mill where cyclists can see the former smithy where Kirkpatrick McMillan invented the pedal cycle in 1840. You can also see a replica at the Scottish Cycle museum at nearby Drumlanrig Castle.

This year, as recognition of our area as a cycling destination, the week-long Tour of Britain cycle race visits the area for the first time with its only Scottish leg finishing in Castle Douglas - before its London finale several days later.

Many cyclists of varying standards and disciplines visit our increasingly popular area for a cycling break. Please contact us if you need help with accommodation and pre-arranged cycling break arrangements.
