Gardens and Nurseries
Search for Gardens and Nurseries:
Southern Scotland possesses some of the loveliest gardens in Scotland, both large and small, along with a wide range of specialist nurseries which, together provide a mecca for the garden lover.
The region is blessed by a mild oceanic climate, a product of the warming influence of the Gulf Stream. The region is blessed with mostly free-draining and lime-free soils and is generally less exposed to strong winds and hard frosts than areas further north. This combination is not only ideal for growing rhododendrons and azaleas, which are the pride of many gardens within the region, but also a diverse range of other plants from many different parts of the world.
In addition to favourable growing conditions, southern Scotland has seen a succession of imaginative gardeners, who have left behind a legacy of gardens of different periods and styles. These range from historical stalwarts .....to many of our talented and inventive present day gardeners. Through the work of the School of Practical Gardening at Threave, near Castle Douglas, Dumfries & Galloway, in particular, continues to contribute to international horticulture.
