Description
Grey Mare's Tail Nature Reserve Moffat Valley, Dumfries & Galloway. Ranger/naturalist (based at Threave) tel (01556) 502575 A magnificent upland property of 870 ha (2,150 a), unfolding from the waterfall that cascades into the Moffat valley up steep slopes to the postglacial Loch Skene and its corries beyond. The summit of White Coombe(821 m) is the highest point. A landscape shaped by human activity since the Iron Age, it lies on a historic communications route and has strong connections with the Covenanters who sought sanctuary here in the 17th century. The property is botanically outstanding and contains the richest collection of rare upland plants in southern Scotland: it is now a Special Area of Conservation. A Visitor Centre offers CCTV views of a peregrine falcon nest site and a panoramic view of hillside features. Programme of guided walks throughout summer. This property of 870 ha (2,151 a), extending to Loch Skeen and White Coomb, was purchased in 1962 by the Trust's Mountainous Country Fund formed by Percy Unna. A further 52 ha (128 a) at Dob's Linn were purchased in 1972.
