New Abbey
New Abbey is a grey-stone village settled beside the river, with nearby costume museum and working water-powered corn mill, dating from 18th century. New Abbey is named after the Cirstercian abbey founded here in 1273 by Devorguilla Balliol (mother of Scotland's unfortunate King John). The fact that she is buried in front of the high altar with the heart of her dead husband is probably the reason for the romatic name 'Sweetheart Abbey', now commonly given to its ruins. |
