Description

Ken-Dee marshes has a mixture of wetland and woodland habitats, and along the trail visitors have the opportunity to view stunning scenery and get close to wildlife some of which is unique to this area of Dumfries and Galloway. In early October, Greenland white-fronted geese arrive on the reserve, joining large groups of ducks, rails and otters that are residents on the wetlands throughout the year. Willow tits are common in the woodland, and the rare red squirrel can often be seen. In the spring, redstarts and pied flycatchers breed in the woods. Red kites have been re-introduced to the area, and Ken-Dee marshes is one of the best places to see these wonderful birds of prey. The red kite trail due to open in the summer of 2003 will include interpretation points, a feeding station, and the best red kite viewing points in the Glenkens.
