Description
Breathtaking scenery and an ever-changing wildlife spectacle makes this reserve a delight to visit at any time of the year. Over the winter months, Mersehead is renowned for the impressive flocks of migratory barnacle geese, that travel from the arctic in October. Pintail ducks and teal fill the wetlands on the reserve and smaller farmland and woodland birds are busy feeding in the fields and along the hedges. Offshore, rafts of divers, grebes and sea duck float on the shimmering Solway. In the spring, flowering plants, butterflies and dragonflies add colour to Mersehead and skylark song and displays of lapwing, snipe, curlew and redshank fill the air. Spring and summer are also good times to see mammals, and on warm evenings barn owls can be seen hunting at dusk, amidst a background of croaking natterjack toads.
