Description

The wood of Cree is the largest remaining ancient semi-natural wood land in the south of Scotland. In spring, violets and primroses give way to a carpet of bluebells and the reserve comes to life with a chorus of birdsong with wood warblers, pied flycatchers and redstarts arrive in the woodland to breed. Barn owls, tawny owls and woodpeckers are commonly seen and dippers and wagtails breed along the woodland buns and waterfalls. Otters are seen regularly from the riverside viewing platform, and dragonflies, toads and frogs abound in the herb-rich fen and water meadows. The reserve forms part of a community woodland project, revitalizing native woodlands along the Cree Valley to loch Trool.
