The Area

Welcome to Visitsouthernscotland.comDumfries & Galloway, the Scottish Borders and Ayrshire & Arran regions of Southern Scotland are lands of breathtaking scenery and areas of outstanding natural beauty, wilderness and romance.

Biosphere status has recently been awarded by UNESCO to Dumfries and Galloway and south Ayrshire. Biosphere designation now recognises many unique habitats within or close to the Galloway Forest Park which attracts around 800,000 visitors each year.

Follow in the footsteps of Burns from his birthplace in Alloway through to his final resting place in Dumfries or those of Sir Walter Scott through Selkirk. Marvel at the grand abbeys of Melrose or Jedburgh or simply take in the quaint atmospheres in the abundance of towns and villages virtually unchanged by the passing years.

East to West visitors to southern Scotland are never far from water. From the Galloway Hills with their many hidden lochs, burns and waterfalls to the Irish Sea which separates Scotland from the Emerald Isle and the Isle of Man to the beautiful Solway coastline to the wild and exposed North Sea coast.
