The Games
will be held in the park at New Galloway near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway on Sunday
3rd August 2008 starting at 2.00 pm and will include: The Gird 'n' Cleek World Championship. This is traditionally
Scottish, but has spread to many countries by emigrating Scots with each
country often creating a new name for it. Most Girds are iron hoops
about 3 ft. in diameter (0.91 m) and, traditionally, the driving cleek
is a separate instrument for guiding it. The course is oval and the
competition is in the form of a race.
Other events and entertainments include:
Hurlin' the Curlin' Stane. A contest to see
who can throw a curling stone the furthest (on dry land!)
Tractor
pull. Pulling a 1960
Massey Fergusson 35 Tractor for 20 yards in the quickest time.
Tossin' the
Sheaf. This is a real energy
test and also needs skill. The aim is to throw the sheaf as high as
possible over a bar (think High Jump for straw bales and you have the idea)
Snail Racing. This is really a
side-show and a bit of fun when you can bet on which snail will reach
the edge of the circular arena first!
