Wanlockhead
 At 1531 feet (468.08 m) above sea level and Scotland's highest village, Wanlockhead is a little village that time has almost forgotten. Wanlockhead was called Winlocke until 1566, from the Gaelic Cuingealach, meaning narrowness, or narrow place.
Wanlockhead folklore reaches so far back in time that historians and archaeologists will have their work cut out for many years to come in this wonderful place! It is almost inconceivable that the Romans did not take gold and lead as they passed nearby, and there are claims that there are Roman roads and the remains of a fort to be seen.
Visitors to Wanlockhead will not find it hard to be transported back in time two centuries to imagine the couple of hundred heather thatched dwellings which housed the miners, who got lead ore and the families who smelted it.
The world famous Wanlockhead Museum of Lead Mining with it's interactive displays, real mine to explore, shop and tea room tells the history of these folk and is a destination for visitors of all ages who flock to Wanlockhead from every corner of the globe.
The Southern Upland Way runs through Wanlockhead which is an accommodation location for the route.
